The Pequot Lakes Patriots boys’ basketball team lost to visiting Detroit Lakes 59-49 in a Mid-State Conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Jordan Redmond led Pequot Lakes with 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks. But the Patriots’ second-highest scorer, Travis Jacobson, was sidelined with a severely sprained ankle.

A pair of baskets by Redmond gave Pequot Lakes a 6-5 lead, but the Lakers went on an 11-1 run to build a 16-8 lead with 11:35 left in the first half. The Patriots cut the deficit to 19-17 with 6:20 left after two driving layups by Redmond and a rebound basket by Wes Mumm.

The Lakers stretched the lead to 25-19, and maintained a 29-24 lead at intermission despite 14 points by Redmond.

The second half started with a display of three-point shooting by both teams as Detroit Lakes’ Derek Long and Brett Peterson both swished a pair of 3-point baskets. The Patriots’ John Craig later drained a 3-point shot to cut the deficit to 37-33. The Lakers extended the lead to 52-41 with 4:08 left, and they maintained that advantage as Detroit Lakes’ Ryan Cihak made four straight free throws to offset a 3-point basket by Tyler Tappe.

Kirk McLeod led Detroit Lakes with 22 points. The Patriots did enjoy a 25-20 edge in rebounds.

“We missed Jacobson, but our guys gave an inspired effort,” said Pequot Lakes coach Garry Grewe. “We never gave up, and played hard until the end.”

The Patriots, 4-3 in the conference and 6-9 overall, were postponed at Pelican Rapids on Tuesday, Jan. 29, and that game will be played on Feb.16. The Patriots are scheduled to host Park Rapids at 7:15 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 1.
