On Thursday, Jan. 17, the Cardinals had too much depth and too much outside shooting success with eighth three-point baskets. Kelly Pearson scored a game-high 25 points and reached 1,000 career points as S-M, ranked No. 9 in Class AA,
S-M improved to 6-0 in the conference while the Patriots fell to 3-1 in the Mid-State.
“(S-M’s) depth wore us out in the second half,” said Pequot Lakes coach Jon Dale. “We caught up a few times, but (S-M) would hit a three to start a run. They’re a good team, and their depth was the difference.”
The teams exchanged leads early before a 6-0 run by the Cardinals gave them a 22-17 advantage. Katie White nailed a three-point basket for Pequot Lakes, but S-M went on a 12-0 run. The half ended with the Cardinals owning a 38-26 cushion.
The Patriots got back into the game early in the second half after a pair of baskets by each Lane and Kreitz. S-M went on another run to assume a 46-38 lead following a three-point basket by Kyann Nyhus. Pequot Lakes chipped away at the lead and cut the deficit to 46-43 after baskets by Miller and Kreitz. But Jasmine McGillivray made a three-point shot to start a 15-0 run and push the lead to 61-43.
The Patriots cut the deficit to 16 points, but the Cardinals ended the game with three-pointers by Mikayla Wing and McGillivray. Lane netted a team-high 19 points while Miller notched 16 and Kreitz had 13.
