The Sauk Rapids-Rice Storm assumed a quick 3-0 lead, and then held off the visiting Northern Lakes Lightning boys’ hockey team for a 6-4 non-conference win on Saturday, Jan. 19.
Northern Lakes, 6-9 overall, was scheduled to play Prairie Centre on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The Lightning is scheduled to play at Morris-Benson on Thursday, Jan. 24.
"We're just trying to find ways to win games and be more consistent," said Lightning coach Shawn Chambers.

Kyle Narveson, Kegan Couture, Austin Mesenbrink and Alex Galligan each scored for Northern Lakes. The Storm led 3-0 before Couture cut the deficit with a goal, assisted by Gaven Bickford and Damian Jensen. Narveson then tallied, assisted by Couture, to make it 3-2. SR-R answered with a power-play goal late in the opening period for a two-goal lead.
Mesenbrink scored the only goal of the second period, and the Storm lead was reduced to 4-3 heading into the third period. SR-R extended the lead early in the third period and then added an insurance goal late in the game. Alex Galligan did score in the final minute.
Northern Lakes' netminders Mitch Stangel and Jaeger Reed combined to stop 18 shots while Justin Thorson had 24 saves for the Storm.
"It wasn't a good night for the goalies," Chambers said. "It was a pretty even matchup."

Park Rapids 6, Lightning 1
Hunter Leslie opened the scoring for Northern Lakes, but the next six goals were by the Panthers in a Mid-State Conference game Thursday, Jan. 17.
Leslie’s goal, which was assisted by Bickford and Couture, came on the power play. Frank Moren scored to tie it later in the opening period. Park Rapids came back with three goals in the middle period to assume a 4-1 lead.
Stangel had 32 saves for the Lightning, who was outshot 38-20.
"We had a couple weak shifts in the second period," Chambers said. "And then we didn't capitalize on a couple power plays, and couldn't get any momentum."
