The Pine River-Backus Tigers girls’ basketball team easily handled the Barnum Bombers 61-27 in a home game on Saturday, Dec. 29.
The Tigers won the tip and were the first to score as Kendra Brasel put in a layup off an assist by Megan Felthous. Brasel scored again 20 seconds later, and Barnum got on the board 20 seconds after that with a three-point basket.
The Tigers went on a nine-point run before Barnum could score again, including three points by Autumn Ackerman, four points by Felthous, and two more from Brasel.
Barnum got another three pointer, and the Tigers answered with another nine point run with two points by Ackerman, five from Brittany Kelley, and yet another two by Brasel.
With four minutes left in the half, Barnum scored six points within a minute, while Ackerman put in two more points for the Tigers to make the score 24-12.
Barnum got another three pointer with two minutes left, with 28 seconds left Tatum Sheley hit her first points of the season, as she’s been out due to injury, by putting in a short jump shot, and Barnum hit their fifth 3-pointer of the half with 14 seconds left.
The Tigers weren’t finished, however, as Felthous put in two free throws with only six seconds left to give the Tigers the lead 28-18 going into half time.
The Tigers dominated the second half as they outscored Barnum 33-9. Kelley and Brasel led the Tigers with 15 points apiece.
Kelley also had six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Brasel also had five assists and three steals. Felthous finished with 12 points, six rebounds, five assists, and four steals.
Ackerman had 11 points, six rebounds, three steals, and one assist. Sheley had four points, two steals, one assist, and one rebound. Journee Howard and Nicole Arends each added two points for the Tigers.
The Tigers, 6-2 overall, are scheduled to play the Blackduck Drakes in a conference home game on Thursday, Jan. 3.
