Tigers suffer first loss of season to rival Patriots

The visiting Pine River-Backus Tigers girls’ basketball team suffered a difficult loss to the Pequot Lakes Patriots Tuesday, Dec. 18 in a non-conference game. The Tigers won the tip and were the first to score as Brittany Kelley made two points after getting a rebound with less than a minute off the clock. Megan Felthous and Autumn Ackerman each added two more points for the Tigers before the Patriots scored their first points to give the Tigers an early lead 6-0. With 13 minutes left in the half Pequot scored their first points, the Tigers answered as Felthous put in a layup, Pequot scored three more points, and Kelley put in two more for the Tigers to make the score 10-5. The Patriots scored four points within a minute, Journee Howard answered with two points for the Tigers, and Pequot tied it 12-12 with a three-pointer. Pequot went ahead by one with a free throw, the Tigers took the lead again as Ackerman put in a layup, and Pequot tied it 14-14 with another free throw. Felthous broke the tie as she put a rebound back up for two points for the Tigers and Howard lengthened the Tigers’ lead to four as she made two points. Unfortunately, that was the last time the Tigers scored in the first half while Pequot scored 11 points to make the score at half time 18-25.

In the second half the Tigers were outscored 34-20 which resulted in a Tigers’ loss. Kelley led the Tigers with 11 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocks. Ackerman finished with eight points and four rebounds. Felthous also had eight points, five rebounds, and three steals. Howard had six points. Kendra Brasel and Brooke Richards each had two points, and Megan Porta added a free throw for the Tigers.

Tigers 73, Eagles 39

The Tigers easily handled the Northland Eagles up in Remer on Thursday, Dec. 20. The Tigers won the tip and were the first to score as Ackerman put in two points with only 15 seconds off the clock. Kelley put in two points a minute later and Howard added a free throw a minute after that to give the Tigers the lead 5-0. Northland scored one point on a free throw, Felthous scored her first two of 35 points in the game, and Northland managed another free throw to make the score 7-2. The Eagles scored two points and the Tigers answered with a nine-point run including two from Kelley, two from Felthous, two from Brasel, and three from Howard. By half time the Tigers were up 33-14.

In the second half, the Tigers outscored the Eagles 40-25 as all but two of the Tigers’ non-starters scored. Felthous finished with a double-double of 35 points and 11 rebounds. She also had three steals and three assists. Kelley had 12 points, five assists, one rebound, one steal, and one block. Howard had seven points, four rebounds, and four assists. Brasel had six points and five steals. Ackerman finished with four points, eight rebounds, three blocks, two assists, and two steals. Nicole Arends had four points, one rebound, and one assist. Porta had three points and two rebounds. Jess Hanneken rounded out the Tigers’ scoring with two points.

The Tigers are now 5-2 overall. They are scheduled to host the Barnum Bombers on Saturday, Dec. 29.
