The Northern Lakes Lightning girls’ hockey team was edged by Hibbing/Chisholm 3-2 in non-conference action Thursday, Dec. 20, at Breezy Point Arena.
The Lighting trailed 3-0 after two periods as Hibbing/Chisholm was sparked by a pair of goals by Erin Scovill. Courtney Kittock and Megan Snyder each scored goals for the Northern Lakes to lead a third-period comeback bid.
Kittock scored on a backhanded shot in the top of the net after a nice centering pass from Erika Monson just 14 seconds into the final period. Morgan Demars of Pine River-Backus also assisted on the goal. Snyder scored on a shot in the top corner, assisted by Kaylyn Eggena and Alex Palm, with 12:06 remaining to set up a close finish.
Northern Lakes pulled its goaltender, Kat Jensen, in the final minute but were unable to tie the game.
“Hibbing is a fast team, and we were losing the races to the puck,” Lightning head coach Kirsten Harsha said of the first two periods. “We realized we were down, but we had a goal to win the third period, and we did. We had our chances, and I’m proud that we didn’t quit.”
Jensen had 25 saves while winning netminder Amanda Klennert had 19 stops for the Bluejackets, who are ranked No. 14 in Class AA and 9-4 overall.
The Northern Lakes junior varsity team lost 2-1 in a shootout. The only shootout goal was by Allie Olson. Madison Galligan played the first two periods in goal while Hailey Deutsch played the final period and the shootout.
