The Pequot Lakes junior varsity girls’ basketball team improved to 6-0 overall after defeating Park Rapids 56-32 on Tuesday, Dec. 11.
The Patriots were led in scoring by Hailey Wiebolt with 12 points and Katie Ryan 11.
“We played well (against Park Rapids),” said Pequot Lakes coach Kate Dale. “We’re happy to be unbeaten since we played some tough teams like Thief River Falls, East Grand Forks and Detroit Lakes.”
On Dec. 4, the Patriots defeated Detroit Lakes 32-28 after trailing the Lakers 17-16 at the half. Caitie Ryan finished with 17 points for Pequot Lakes while Hailey Wiebolt had six, Jessica Faacks four, Morgan Lohmilller three and Barb Miller two.
On Dec. 7, the Patriots downed Thief River Falls 56-41 after grabbing an early 19-1 lead. Pequot Lakes eventually led 38-28 at the half. The Patriots had a balanced scoring attack with Wiebolt netting 13, Laura Squires 10, Lohmiller eighth, Emilee Buell seven, Anderson and Miller each with six, Caitlyn Carkhuff four and Faacks two.
Against East Grand Forks on Dec. 8, the Patriots jumps to an early 19-2 lead and held on for a 39-30 victory. Squires led her team with 12, Facks added 10, Carkhuff, Lohmiller and Meghan Nelson each had four, Wiebolt had three, and Carkhuff and Emily Markham each had a free throw.
JV boys improve to 4-1
The Pequot Lakes junior varsity boys’ basketball team suffered its first loss in five games after falling to Detroit Lakes 58-47 on Friday, Dec. 14. The Patriots, who trailed 33-32 at intermission, were led in scoring by Connor Davich with 15, Jackson Goerges 11, C.J. Borleis eight and Hunter Larson six.
On Tuesday, Dec. 11, the Patriots defeated Pierz 40-36. Pequot Lakes trailed 9-2 before going on an 11-point run that ended with a three-point basket by Borleis. Five late points by Jack Kreitz gave the hosts an 18-16 lead.
Pierz tied it to start the second half, but Pequot Lakes regained a lead on Borleis’ three-point shot.
The Pioneers eventually led 33-28, but the Patriots closed out the game with a 12-3 run to win. Pequot Lakes’ final eight points came at the charity stripe as Borleis and Lucas Mumm were both 4-for-4.
“The difference was free throws,” said Pequot Lakes coach Brian Lempola. “We missed our first two free throws in the first half, but we only missed one after that.”
Borleis led the Patriots with 13 points while Kreitz added seven, Davich six, Larson, Mumm and Brandon Hehir each with four, and Erik Elverum had two.
On Dec. 7, the Patriots downed Wadena-Deer Creek 57-34 after leading 33-19 at the half. Kreitz led Pequot Lakes with 15 points while Davich and Borleis each had 11, Mumm seven, Larson six, Hehir five and Austin Anderson two.
On Dec. 4, the Patriots beat Bagley 54-36 after assuming a 31-12 lead at intermission. Kreitz had a game-high 17 while Davich added 15, Hehir 11, Mumm four, Larson three, and Anderson and Elverum each had two.
Freshmen boys seek 1st win
The Pequot Lakes freshmen boys’ basketball team is still seeking their first win after a 62-46 loss to Detroit Lakes on Dec. 14. Gage Westlund and Josh Buell each had nine points while Hunter Goerges had eight for the Patriots.
On Dec. 11, Pequot Lakes lost to Pierz 58-28. Westlund paced the Patriots with 10 points, Cody Huss and Goerges each had six, and Connor Dale, Jordan Oaks and Buell each had two. Nick Herold poured in 20 to lead the Pioneers.
On Dec. 4, Bagley handed the Patriots a 59-25 defeat. Huss finished with seven points, Dale had five, Westlund and Oaks each with four, Dylan Walberg and Buell each had two, and Goerges had one.
