The Pequot Lakes boys’ basketball team dropped to 2-3 overall with a 73-46 Mid-State Conference loss at Detroit Lakes on Friday, Dec. 14, and a 47-40 non-conference setback against the visiting Pierz Pioneers on Tuesday, Dec. 11.
The Patriots, 1-1 in the Mid-State Conference, were scheduled to be at Park Rapids for a Mid-State game on Tuesday, Dec. 18, and then play at Pine River-Backus on Thursday, Dec. 20.
Detroit Lakes 73, Patriots 46
On Friday, Dec. 14, the host Lakers assumed an early lead and held off Pequot Lakes by outscoring the Patriots 37-20 in the second half.
Ryan Cihak scored a game-high 19 points for Detroit Lakes while Tyler Tappe led the Patriots with nine points.
The Lakers had a 24-23 edge in rebounds. Jordan Redmond led the Patriots with six assists and four blocks.
“We had a six-point lead with six minutes left in the first half, but (Detroit Lakes) went on a 17-1 run to close out the half,” Pequot Lakes coach Garry Grewe said. “We made way too many turnovers, and weren’t able to get the ball in to Jordan (Redmond).”
Grewe added that a difference in the game was 24 turnovers by the Patriots to 14 for the Lakers, and Pequot Lakes 3-for-11 shooting from the free-throw line.

Pierz 47, Patriots 39
On Dec. 11, the Pioneers improved to 3-0 overall with a win over Pequot Lakes as Cullin Carter netted 17 points and Ben Boser added 14. Tappe led the Patriots with 14 points while Travis Jacobson had 10.
The opening minutes were close until Boser nailed a pair of three-point baskets to give the Pioneers a 17-10 lead. Pequot Lakes did cut the deficit to 17-14 at the half.
The Patriots remained within striking distance in the first five minutes of the second half before Carter scored 11 straight points to give the visitors a 41-30 lead. Pierz later led 44-32 in the final minutes before Pequot Lakes rallied on a 15-foot basket by Jacobson, a three-point play by Tappe and a three-point shot by Kevin Beltz. But the Pioneers held on for a seven-point win.
“We played hard, and kept it close by playing good defense,” Grewe said. “We’re still having our troubles putting it in the hoop.”
