After scoring just four goals in their first three games, the Northern Lakes Lightning boys’ hockey team offense has come to life with 23 goals in the past four games to improve to 4-3 overall.
Last week, the Lightning won a pair of home games at Breezy Point Arena as they edged Monticello 4-3 on Tuesday, Dec. 11, and then dominated Bagley-Fosston 7-2 on Thursday, Dec. 13.
“It was a matter of gaining confidence,” said Northern Lakes coach Shawn Chambers. “We’re also moving the puck well. Our senior line (center Kegan Couture with forwards Ben Moe and Aspen Florey) is scoring most of the goals. They have good chemistry together.”
In the two games, Couture combined for one goal and six assists, Moe added five goals and Florey had two goals and three assists.
The Lightning was scheduled to host Wadena-Deer Creek on Tuesday, Dec. 18, and then play at Park Rapids Area on Thursday, Dec. 20.

Goaltender Mitch Stangel made 26 saves for the Lightning.

Moe scored short-handed in the first and added an even-strength score in the third while Alex Galligan netted a power-play goal in the second. Couture assisted on all three.
“It was a big win since Monticello is also in Section 8AA,” said Chambers, whose squad is 2-0 against Section 8AA teams since they also defeated Becker-Big Lake. “That should help us with (playoff seeding).”
Stangel turned aside 22 shots for the Lightning.
