The Pequot Lakes Patriots played one of their best matches of the season in sweeping the visiting Detroit Lakes Lakers 25-16, 25-6 and 25-19 in a Mid-State Conference volleyball match on Tuesday, Oct. 2.
Abby Palmer had eight kills and Sabrina Aldin added 13 set assists for Pequot Lakes, which improves to 2-1 in the conference and 15-5 overall.
The Patriots, who hosted Park Rapids on Tuesday, Oct. 9, are scheduled to finish the regular season at Pine River-Backus on Thursday, Oct. 11, home against Crosby-Ironton on Monday, Oct. 15, and at Aitkin on Tuesday, Oct. 16.
Detroit Lakes led 7-5 early in the opening game before the Patriots bounced back for a 22-13 lead. Pequot Lakes clinched the win on Katie White’s kill.
The Patriots dominated the second game and quickly built a 5-0 lead on three ace serves by Rosie Mitchell. Pequot Lakes extended the lead to 13-1 after Abby Palmer served seven straight points and Kayla Miller had three kills. White served nine straight points before Mitchell’s block ended the game.
The Patriots never trailed in the third game, but the Lakers kept it close and it was tied 19-19. Palmer then served five points and ended the match with an ace.
“We played our best volleyball of the year,” said Pequot Lakes coach Kate Dale. “I didn’t think we could sweep them, especially beating them 25-6 in the second game.

JV team falls to Lakers
The Pequot Lakes junior varsity volleyball team led 18-13 in the first game before eventually losing to Detroit Lakes 25-20. The Lakers won the second game 25-17 and took the third game 15-10.
The Pequot Lakes C-team led the first game 17-8 before winning 25-14 on Debra Mitchell’s kill and Caitlin Carkhuff’s ace serve. The Lakers assumed a 21-9 lead in the second game before Carkhuff served 10 straight points, with five aces, to cut the deficit to 21-20. The Patriots eventually lost 25-20.
The Patriots led the third game 10-7 after two ace serves by Mikaela Florey, but Pequot Lakes couldn’t hold the lead and lost 16-14.
