Not in PR-B School District's best interest

Posted: September 24, 2013 - 5:32pm

Lee Aimers retired last spring after a 34-year teaching career. It was a tough decision. He loves kids; he loves teaching; he was, and is, passionate about a career he found very rewarding.

He promised the many students, parents and staff who asked that he would be available for substitute teaching this fall and would keep in touch.

A couple of weeks into the school year, Lee was informed by Superintendent Bettino that his name would not appear on the substitute teacher calling list. When Lee asked why his name would not appear on the list, Superintendent Bettino wrote in an email to him that allowing him to substitute teach would not be “in the best interest of the school district.”

Lee was not terribly surprised at this turn of events. He has a long history of speaking up regarding policies that he considers foolish, some of which he — and other teachers in the district — felt were not in the best interest of the students and would ultimately lead to lower test scores. (Have you had an opportunity to look at Pine River-Backus’ recent scores?)

More than once, this placed him in conflict with the administration. Apparently, the superintendent equates speaking your mind with making trouble, while the majority of the rest of us recognize that he was speaking his conscience.

Lee’s goal always was, and is, to advocate for kids.

Blacklisting Lee Aimers from the substitute teaching pool is absurd, to put it mildly, and this sort of vindictive behavior on the part of the administration with the support of much of the school board will not stop until the voters of this district get involved and demand that this decision be reversed immediately.

Nancy Aimers,

Backus
