City's unhealable scar

Posted: August 20, 2013 - 6:20pm

To the mayor and Pequot Lakes City Council:

I would like to thank you and the council for a thankless job in getting the tax issue between old Sibley Township and the city of Pequot Lakes finally settled. Or is it?

The animosity between the two locations, unfortunately, has put an unhealable scar on the city. The individuals who created this interference while the council attempted to do its job should be ashamed. The idle threat that it could go back to the way it was is not a fearful thing to some in the old Sibley Township locations as we were not for the change to start with.

One definition of “tax” is to provide funds for services. Years back a fine, devoted man named Don Nelson provided the maintenance and services as needed for Sibley Township. He was on call and willing to do the job.

Where we are located on South Sluetter Road the road maintenance is shared by Loon Lake Township and the city of Pequot Lakes. Loon Lake Township is very dependable. I have doubts if this tax increase will change anything as far as services and the chance of paved streets and streetlights like our city cousins have.

It cost $180 to pump the septic tank recently, and if the well goes dry it’s our responsibility. Just thinking.

Maurice Karst,

Formerly of Sibley Township
