In answer to Cathy Malecha’s editorial (Echo and Brainerd Dispatch) there are a couple of things to be aired. First, the Pequot property tax payers were never informed, never. Forbes Martinson was mayor 2001-2002. Joann Johnson, Jerry Thompson, Joyce Noren and Greg Welu were on the council.
Second, she goes on to say that to lay blame on this council is ridiculous, and that these people were not ever involved at the time of the annexation. She’s a little confused here. Of course she and Dave Sjoblad were involved from day one, she and Dave both signed the tax papers that day, June 4, 2002, both have known of this for the last 11 years and both have been on the council the same amount of years (she resigned July 26, 2012) and have done nothing about it. Yes, we can blame this council as they were all from Sibley in 2012 and I’m sure they were all aware of it.
Third, I know Cathy was a paid, elected township clerk up to June 4, 2002, and still a resident of Sibley, but if she said she moved into the city limits in mid-2002, after the annexation, that’s good enough for me. I was misinformed on her place of residency, it was never intended to deceive anyone. I stand corrected.
Fourth, since May 2012 it’s been all about this council’s act of defiance. They’ve had plenty of time to do something about it, and their obligation is to make it right, as this has been wrong from the start. It’s discrimination at its worst.
One other thing, when I came to the June meeting to be on open forum, Dave Sjoblad asked the mayor “Are we going to let him talk?” With this “mightier than thou” mentality there’s a serious problem at City Hall. I talked!
