Patriot students volunteer for Day of Caring

Posted: May 14, 2013 - 5:20pm

Approximately 500 Pequot Lakes High School students volunteered their time and energy to improve their community on Thursday, May 9. Some planted trees at the Corps of Engineers Campground at the south end of Gull Lake, others worked at the Crosslake Community Center and at the Corps Campground in Crosslake.

While other students were volunteering at the Lake Sibley city park and local fire departments and helping widows or handicapped residents with their spring cleanup, two junior students climbed the Pequot Lakes DNR fire tower and gave the exterior of the cab a new coat of silver paint.

No, this was not a prank. I am a retired DNR forester who supervised the work, and safety was assured as the girls reached out through the windows and used rollers on long handles to apply the paint.

It was all part of the continuing effort to assure a safe, enjoyable and educational experience by community members and tourists who enjoy climbing the tower to get a bird’s-eye view of the lake country without having to go for an airplane ride.

The girls, Megan Glover and Bridget Erickson, gathered trash and spread wood chips on the walking path to the fire tower. Their work is greatly appreciated by our community.

Pequot Patriots have chosen to be part of the solution, not part of the problem!

Keith Simar,

Retired DNR forester
