Local student studying in Australia

Kirstie Harmdierks, the daughter of Kay Johnson of Breezy Point, is studying in Australia during spring semester through the Office for Education Abroad at the College of St. Benedict (CSB) in St. Joseph and St. John’s University (SJU) in Collegeville.

Harmdierks is a junior psychology and biology double major at CSB.

The Australia program is located in Fremantle in western Australia, approximately 30 miles from the capital city of Perth. Students enroll at the University of Notre Dame Australia (UNDA), the country’s first private, Catholic university.

College Fair slated April 5 at Camp Ripley

Central Lakes College will hold a College Fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, April 5, at the Hanger Conference Center at Camp Ripley.

The College Fair will feature informational booths with college programs, scholarship and grant information, financial aid and details on admission requirements. VA education representatives and military recruiting staff will also be available at the event.

The college fair is open to the public. Area residents of all ages interested in higher education are encouraged to attend.

PLMS Artists of Third Quarter listed

Pequot Lakes Middle School students Alexandra Rieschl, Jacob Faacks, Nick Gyllenblad, Abigail Reigel, Jannah Hall, Ethan Jordan, Alexandra Stone and Jake Anderson are Artists of the Third Quarter.

These students have shown great artistic skills and have had a positive attitude toward learning. Although all students at this level are still developing their artistic talents, the award is given to students who have gone above and beyond what is asked of them to complete a project. 

They have continuously demonstrated their love of being artistic.

Students raise money for 'Hoops for Heart'

On March 8, kindergarten, first- and second-grade students at Eagle View Elementary School participated in Hoops for Heart.

The students raised about $6,000, with the top fundraiser, Calia Chaney, raising $315.

The students celebrated their efforts with a party during their physical education class. They enjoyed basketball stations including shooting, dribbling and passing.

The Pequot Lakes PTA donated popcorn and ice cream treats, while the Activities Department donated Powerade for the students.

PLMS Students of Excellence listed

Pequot Lakes Middle School students Will Middleton, Hannah Tatge, Tyler Manley, Ashlynn Reynolds, Kristin Skog, Matthew Fabian, Gage Westlund and Alyssa Golden are Third Quarter Students of Excellence.

The Student of Excellence award is for students who are performing at the top level of excellence at school. Teachers select students who rise to the expectations of the middle school, which believes in PRIDE — perseverance, respect, integrity, discipline and excellence — in all we do at Pequot Lakes Middle School.

Local woman to serve as missionary across U.S.

Most summers, you can find 18-year-old Melina Birchem somewhere in Hackensack, sometimes helping at the children’s fishing contest, sometimes watching over her siblings in the park, but mostly waitressing at her parents’ restaurant, Viddles & Joe.

She loves the summer, hoping the days of flip-flops and sun will never end.

But this summer is different.

Eveland participates in Northwestern College Women's Chorale 2013 Spring Tour

Northwestern College announces that Tiara Eveland, the daugher of Kent and Therese Eveland of Backus, will participate in the Northwestern College Women’s Chorale 2013 Spring Tour.

Tour dates and locations include Thursday, April 25, in St. Paul; Thursday and Friday, April 25 and 26, in Rochester; Sunday, April 28, in New Brighton; and Tuesday, April 30, in Roseville.

Eveland is a 2010 graduate of Pine River-Backus High School and is a junior pursuing a degree in psychology.

The Northwestern College Women’s Chorale is directed by Mary Kay Geston.

Cass organizations can apply for funds for locally grown foods

The Cass County Community Health Board, with funding from the State Health Improvement Program (SHIP) grant, offers an opportunity for community organizations in Cass County to apply for funds to increase access to, education of, and/or availability of healthy locally grown foods.

Funds are intended for groups in Cass County to facilitate policy, systems and environmental changes that increase access to, education of, and/or availability of healthy, locally grown foods.

2nd Thursday to benefit CLC Scholarship Program

This month the 2nd Thursday Happy Hour For a Cause will benefit the Central Lakes College Student Scholarship Program.

The evening features wine tasting and light hors d’oeuvres from 5-7 p.m. April 11 at Prairie Bay in Baxter. A tax-deductible minimum donation of $15 will be accepted at the door.

Orphan Train subject of April 4 presentation

Renée Wendinger will present “Orphan Train Saga: Forced Migration of Homeless Children” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in Room E203 at Central Lakes College, Brainerd.

So-called Orphan Trains carried more than 200,000 children, ages 3 months to 17 years, from orphanages in New York to the Midwest from 1854-1929 in the largest mass migration of children ever to take place on American soil. Most of these children were immigrants from European countries.
