The Pequot Lakes speech team will host its first-ever open house at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, in the sixth-grade discovery area at Pequot Lakes Middle School.

After a brief welcome from the team’s coaches, those who attend will be able to go to different classrooms to watch students perform the pieces they have been working on all season.

The event is an opportunity for parents and community members to see the hard work and talent that goes into a successful speech team as well as gain a better understanding of the activity.

Is your child interested in science? Do they have fun doing experiments and figuring out why things do what they do?

In the Sweet Science class students will explore all sorts of fun science concepts using many different types of candy. They will find out if Butterfingers float or sink. What does it take to make an M&M turn brown? What happens to a candy cane when you heat it up? How much sugar is really in our treats? Come and have a “Whopper” of a good time.

The Pequot Lakes High School Grad Blast began in 1990 with just 60 graduates and a 1985 Buick was given as the grand prize.

By 1993, enough donations were obtained to make sure every graduate left the event with a nice prize.

To date, this event has achieved a 95 percent turnout rate on the night of graduation. In the past 23 years of Grad Blast, there has not been one automobile accident involving Pequot Lakes graduating seniors.

Over spring break, Pine River sent a small team to the last JV speech meet in Walker on March 12. 

Claudina Williams took a red ribbon and the Heartland Award on Tuesday for her informative speech on Haiti.  Over the entire season (eighteen possible rounds), Claudina took first place in nine rounds and second place in six rounds.
