The month of December is one of our shortest in terms of contact with our students and like all of us at this time of year, the holidays can take their toll on our health, both mentally and physically.
I would like to offer some thoughts on how to cope with this time of year for our students and families:
1. Do what you can to maintain as regular of a schedule as possible for your kids during the week. Research shows that consistent schedules including meals, homework and bed time can greatly reduce levels of stress.
2. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Good advice for Thanksgiving, but also for the weeks leading up to Christmas. There are student programs, family gatherings, travel plans and so many demands on our time that we find it hard to say no. Do your best to manage your time and again allow for adequate rest, in particular with our younger students.
3. We will have two weeks off at Christmas. Be sure to carve out some time for your kids to do some reading. I know it is the last thing on many of their minds, but a great way to keep their brains engaged during the extended time off.
These thoughts are easy to write and difficult to follow through on I know, but I encourage you to do what you can to help our kids navigate this fun but challenging time of year for learning.
Last month, we were able to participate in a wonderful fundraising spaghetti dinner and the annual Give to the Max event. I want all who participated in these activities to know how much we as a school community appreciate the support. It is an old adage and still very true in that it takes a village to raise a child.
I remain very grateful for the support we receive from our community, our parents and all the volunteers who take time out of their busy schedules to give back to our school whether with their time or financial resources.
Like many of our area schools, we will celebrate the season by showcasing some of our student talent with a holiday concert on Thursday, Dec. 12 at 5 p.m. Please consider joining us!
We at Crosslake Community School wish all of you the very best during this wonderful time of year!
