The Pelican Lakes Conservation Club (PLCC) scholarship recipients — Meghan Wheeler, Taylor Popkes, Eleanor Heggerston and Briana Thorkelson — were honored at the PLCC annual picnic July 17.
All four recipients received a $1,000 scholarship from PLCC.
Heggerston is a 2013 graduate of Pequot Lakes High School. She plans to major in environmental engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She would love to be an environmental engineer for the Environmental Protection Agency in Washington, D.C.
Wheeler is a 2013 graduate of Pine River-Backus High School. She plans to major in education at Bemidji State University and to be a high school biology teacher. She looks forward to bringing an awareness and understanding of conservation to her students.
Popkes is a 2013 graduate of Crosby-Ironton High School. She plans to major in natural resources or another DNR program at Vermilion Community College in Ely. She hopes to get a job in Fisheries and Wildlife management.
Thorkelson is a 2013 graduate of Brainerd High School. She plans to attend Central Lakes College, then North Dakota State University. She plans to major in environmental science with a focus on biology or ecology and she hopes to use her degree to test and preserve natural resources.
