Everything about the car driven in the Supermileage Challenge stock class by the team from Pine River-Backus High School is original. But the most unique aspect just might be its bright pink paint job.

PR-B’s pink car stood out among all the other cars painted the more traditional black, white or green at the Supermileage Challenge on May 14-15 at Brainerd International Raceway. Team members said they chose pink to support breast cancer patients and survivors.

The color wasn’t the only unique part of the car, though.

“We build new cars every year from scratch,” Brian Derosia said. “The steering wheel, the frame, the wheels, it’s all original.”

Sponsored by the Minnesota Corn Growers Association for most of its 25-year existence, the Supermileage Challenge is an event where students try to build the most fuel-efficient vehicle possible. Nearly 500 students from 50 schools built more than 80 cars to compete in this year’s Supermileage Challenge, which included E85 (ethanol), modified, stock and electric divisions.

The pink PR-B car not only looked cool, it actually was cool. The team drilled holes in the bottom and in the back to increase air flow and keep the driver as comfortable as possible on a 95-degree day.

“It’s like a built-in air conditioner,” said Lewis Miller, whose camouflage shorts provided an interesting contrast to the pink paint as he sat behind the steering wheel.

The car averaged 141.22 miles per gallon in 13 runs.
