Introduction to Motorcycle class May 8

Posted: April 30, 2013 - 5:34pm

Learn the basics of motorcycle rider safety through one of several motorcycle training sessions offered this spring at Central Lakes College-Brainerd Campus.

Introduction to a Motorcycle is a four-hour, range-only course designed for the true novice who would like a hands-on introduction to motorcycle controls and their operation before taking the Basic Rider Course. There are no written or skills tests for this course, and a motorcycle permit is not required; however, students will need to possess a valid driver’s license or a driver’s permit.

This course is scheduled from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 8.

For those looking for more, the Basic Rider Course offers the most complete motorcycle training available. Students must complete 14.5 hours of integrated instruction: 4.5 hours in the classroom and 10 hours of practice on a training motorcycle.

This course is divided into two phases:

Level 1 concentrates on motorcycle familiarization, clutch control, throttle control, riding posture and the four basic skills — straight-line riding, turning, shifting and stopping.

Level 2 includes limited-space maneuvers, counter-steering, cornering and swerving.

Minnesota law requires motorcyclists under age 18 to pass an approved Rider Skills Training course.

While no previous motorcycle riding experience is required, it can be beneficial. Students must be able to ride a bicycle and must possess a valid driver’s license or motor vehicle instruction permit. Each student must furnish his or her own protective clothing and DOT-approved helmet; and 100 percent attendance is mandatory.

Courses are scheduled throughout the spring and summer, with the next session scheduled May 2-5 at the CLC Campus in Brainerd.

Advanced rider courses are also available.
