Under the instruction of Katie Urban from the Science Museum of Minnesota, students at Crosslake Community School held a ribbon representing the length of a blue whale. The students stretched the ribbon to see if a whale would fit in their gym, only to find the gym was not quite big enough. Urban visited the school to educate students on animals of the Arctic. A representative from the Science Museum of Minnesota stopped by Pine River-Backus Elementary School on Wednesday, Jan. 16.

Primary students enjoyed manipulating objects by plucking, striking or rubbing to cause vibration. They soon discovered that vibrating objects make sound.

Third-graders discovered water’s long history as it moves and cycles around our planet. They learned that water is an essential resource for life on Earth and is in fixed supply.

Fourth-graders watched sparks fly, hair standing on end, and were amazed by demonstrations of electricity.

Fifth-graders were introduced to the science of chemistry and explored the properties of solids, liquids and gases and how energy changes matter from one state to another.

The Pine River-Backus Elementary PTO donated funds to help sponsor this annual learning event.
