Cass County 4-Hers achieve top honors at Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup

Minnesota youth earned top honors among more than 330 of the nation’s most knowledgeable 4-H Horse Program members during the 2012 Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup, an annual event hosted by the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Ky.

All contestants must be ages 14-19 and qualified for the competition by earning top honors at their state 4-H horse contest.

The team demonstration of Cass County 4-Hers Hayley Carlson, 15, and Mary Sarah Sauber, 16, placed sixth overall in the team demonstrations category with their topic of “How to Make Horse Treats.”

The team started demonstrating together four years ago at the Cass County Fair. Every year Carlson and Sauber picked a different topic, from cleaning saddles to camping with horses to preparing chickens to show.

“I remember our first demo together; my part was pretty bad. I had never talked in front of an audience before and talked very quietly,” Sauber said.

Each year they improved and found more useful demonstrating ideas.

“Now I find demonstrating a lot of fun and really do enjoy giving demos,” Sauber said.

For three years the team has been advancing to the State Fair, once coming away with a purple ribbon.

The team competed each year at the Minnesota 4-H State Horse Show in September. This year they won first place, earning a trip to the Eastern National 4-H Horse Roundup held the first week of November. “It’s amazing that I could win a national trip with 4-H,” Carlson said. “It was really cool to travel to a different part of the country.”

The contest was held that Saturday leaving a few days for sightseeing.

“Churchill Downs was really amazing, especially in the dark,” said Carlson.

“Just driving and seeing the landscape, fences and huge stables was neat,” said Sauber.

Minnesota was also well represented by other teams and individuals who won their contests at the State Horse Show and advanced.
