Students from the Pine River-Backus High School Interact Club took charge of the Central Lakes Rotary Club meeting Tuesday, Dec. 18.

From opening to closing bell, the Rotary Interactors handled all aspects of the meeting, including a presentation on their current and planned activities.

The Interact Club has attracted many new members this year, as part of its community service activities, has participated in labeling and distribution of dictionaries to third-grade students at Pine River-Backus Elementary School, highway cleanup, the sale of Santa Letters and visited residents of a local nursing home.

Their International Rotary activity is sponsoring and providing tuition of a high school student in Mexico. Activities to be held will include a Valentine Party at the local nursing home in February, a penny drive for polio and the sale of Rotary Roses in the spring.

They will also be involved in the Rotary S.T.R.I.V.E. Program that will begin at Pine River-Backus High School in the fall of 2013.

Interact Clubs are sponsored by local Rotary Clubs, and the students are expected to engage in local community and international projects, and to adhere to Rotary’s motto of “Service Above Self.”

Central Lakes Rotary Club sponsors the Pine River-Backus High School Interact Club as well as the Pequot Lakes High School Interact Club. Each club has a teacher adviser and a Rotary Club liaison.

Students from Pequot Lakes High School Interact will conduct a Rotary Club meeting in January, and Central Lakes Rotary Club will send a student from each Interact Club to Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) Camp in July. “These students set an excellent example for others,” said Central Lakes Rotarian Diane Collins. “They are motivated, enthusiastic and are on their way to becoming wonderful humanitarians. Along that pathway, they are learning what it means to help others, and at the same time, enriching their own lives through those efforts. Simply stated, they are just great kids.”
