Mary Badger of Pequot Lakes received the Ideal Community Service Organization’s (ICSO) 2013 Volunteer of the Year Award.

The award was given at the organization’s annual breakfast meeting Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Old Milwaukee Club Saloon and Eatery. About 30 people attended and learned about ICSO’s accomplishments and honored supporters.

Speaker was Tom Hecker, trail coordinator for the Ideal Sno Pros snowmobile club. He shared that trails are brushed and signed in the fall and groomed September through April; club members ride once a week, and one week each month they ride outside of the area; Crow Wing County has 1,000 miles of trails, including 120 miles that the Sno Pros are responsible for maintaining; and all of their work is done by five or six volunteers.

Vicki Leonard, board member Ideal Scholarship Foundation, reported that six seniors applied for scholarships and $12,000 was awarded. Ron Schultz presented a $3,000 check donation from ICSO to the Ideal Scholarship Foundation and thanked them for all of their work.

Each year the ICSO membership can write in a choice for one particularly significant supporter to be nominated as Volunteer of the Year. ICSO board member Ron Schultz thanked Badger for her outstanding contribution to Ideal Township.

She was a youth instructor at St. Alice Church in Pequot Lakes and served on numerous boards, including Whitefish Golf Course, Big Island, Whitefish Area Lodging Association and the Sno Pros. She was the fire warden who issued burning permits, assisted the Ideal Fire Department Beef Feed for 20 years, maintains the Veterans Walking Trail, worked on display panels at the Ideal Fire museum and currently is working on the Ideal volunteer walkway to open in the spring of 2014.

Badger, once recovered from surprise at being selected, spoke of her small contribution being a part of a larger history of volunteerism throughout Ideal Township.
