Area schools closed Tuesday

Relief from cold expected Friday

Posted: January 7, 2014 - 12:21am

Area schools, including those in Pequot Lakes, Pine River-Backus, Crosslake, Nisswa, Crosby-Ironton and Brainerd, will stay closed Tuesday, Jan. 7, because of the cold.

Gov. Mark Dayton closed all public schools in Minnesota on Monday, Jan. 6. That decision for Tuesday was left up to individual school districts. Because of the continued bitter cold, area districts opted to close for another day.

According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a wind chill warning remained in effect until noon Tuesday. Monday night lows were forecast at 27 to 32 below zero, with wind chill values at 35 below to 45 below zero.

Tuesday’s highs were forecast at 3 below to 8 below, with the lowest wind chill readings of 30 below to 40 below zero in the morning.

Tuesday night, lows were predicted at 23 below to 28 below zero, with wind chills at 30 below to 40 below zero.

Temperatures could finally crack zero Wednesday with highs of 2 below to 3 above zero forecast. Wednesday night lows were forecast at 13 below to 18 below zero, with wind chills at 20 below to 30 below.

Relief from the arctic blast finally is predicted for Thursday, with highs of 10 to 15 — above zero — and lows of 7 to 12 — also above zero.

Highs then are forecast to shoot up to 25 to 30 above zero Friday with a chance of light snow, 25 to 30 above zero Saturday and 28 to 33 above zero Sunday.
