Thanksgiving came a week early for those who dine at the Senior Nutrition Sites at Heartland Apartments in Pine River and Sibley Terrace Apartments in Pequot Lakes.
Nearly 50 people in Pine River and a table of five women and another of three men in Pequot Lakes enjoyed turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberry sauce and green beans along with pumpkin pie Thursday, Nov. 21.
In addition, 38 Pequot Lakes area residents and 30 in Pine River received the traditional holiday meal at their homes through Meals on Wheels. Meals are made at the Heartland Apartments, which have been serving this holiday meal annually for approximately 10 years.
Pine River diners were treated to piano music a half-hour before the meal.
“This is wonderful for the area,” said Lady of the Woods Alma Christensen in Pine River. “I hope they never have to cut it down or out. This is what people need.”
“I love it. I think it’s great that they do this. What I like is the get-togethers. That’s what we come every day for,” Gertrude (Sis) Risnes said in Pine River. “It can get so you don’t spend much time with anybody, but then you get together to eat and have social time.”
Those eating the meals at the Pequot Lakes site were thankful to be alive, for their health, to have a place to live and to have a place to be warm.
“It’s good to be in here with hot food,” said Dee Rager in Pequot Lakes.
The event corresponded with 40 years of Lutheran Social Service (LSS) of Minnesota helping to provide nourishing meals and socializing with those who need them. LSS is responsible for the Meals on Wheels that are important to many seniors in area communities.
