The Nisswa Elementary School fourth-grade classes marched to the Nisswa American Legion on Friday, Nov. 15, to take part in the flag disposal and learn about the importance of the Stars and Stripes.

The students watched a flag disposal ceremony and had the opportunity to place a flag in the fire. The U.S. flag should never be placed in the garbage.

American Legions and VFWs accept flags all year long and have one or more flag disposal ceremonies each year.

Students went inside the Legion to learn about the importance of Old Glory. Dell Draves of the Nisswa American Legion led the program. He asked students to write or remember what the U.S. flag means to them, and introduced the movie “For Which It Stands,” which is about a young boy who learns about himself and flag of the United States from his older brother, neighbors and events.

Draves asked students what is the proper way to show respect to the flag in parades and at sporting events, what are proper ways to care for a flag and dispose of it, and how did stars end up on U.S. flags?

The students enthusiastically answered the questions.

Three Disabled American Veterans and several Nisswa Legion members showed students the proper way to fold a flag and brought groups of students up to fold the flag correctly.

Steve Rosenow, who served in Vietnam, led this part of the program.
