SWCD offers citizen leadership program geared toward water

Posted: October 22, 2013 - 4:15pm

The Crow Wing Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) received a $20,442.80 grant from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) to provide a new citizen leadership program geared toward watersheds (an area that drains into a specific water body) and water quality.

The SWCD is partnering with the University of Minnesota Extension to facilitate the training, and Todd, Wadena, Hubbard, Cass and Morrison SWCDs and counties and Crow Wing County Lake Area and River Alliance to host the seminars.

Denise Stromme, Extension educator, said, “The leadership workshop series will focus on supporting citizen leaders by fostering their confidence, competence and connections in their watershed communities through resources, skills, processes and tools that can help strengthen their current efforts and nurture new ones.”

Melissa Barrick, SWCD district manager, said, “We are excited to offer this two-year program. The first series will begin fall 2013 go through spring 2014. Second series will begin summer 2014. This is a great opportunity for citizens to connect with other citizens and learn from one another. This project will also augment the current MPCA water quality monitoring program.”
