For the 11th year in a row, Brainerd lakes area and statewide environmental organizations are joining together to publicly recognize homeowners, contractors and local units of government that have chosen to develop or redevelop their lakeshore or riverfront properties in full compliance with shoreland zoning ordinances and ecologically sustainable and sensitive principles.
The hope is that through these awards, ecologically sensitive development along lakeshore and river shore will become the fashionable trend. The future health of the region’s lakes and rivers depends on it.
Categories for consideration are lake-friendly home construction, lakescaping, lake-friendly protection strategy and lake/river stewardship. Applications, which are easy to fill out, will be accepted until Sept. 1. Lake associations, neighbors, contractors, nonprofits and local units of government may know of some projects that merit recognition, and may nominate them for the award. There are no contest entry fees.
To nominate someone for this year’s awards, for more information or to get a copy of the application, contact Eleanor Burkett, c/o University Extension, 322 Laurel St., Suite 21, Brainerd, MN 56401, by email at email@example.com or by phone at 218-828-2326.
