EBI Directional Drilling out of Duluth, MN began directional boring in Backus on July 29.
This directional boring is the first physical step towards connecting Backus to the wastewater treatment facility near Pine River, a project began when the city was notified by the MPCA in 2005 that the Backus sewer system needed to be updated.
Lee Bundy, city water/wastewater operator said boring and other sewer line related construction is estimated to take 3 months under optimum weather conditions.
“They’ll be pushing into October,” Bundy said.
Greg Kimman of Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc said that, as of August 5, 4,000 feet of pipe had been laid. The crews on the job have been installing an estimated 600 feet per day. There is currently only one crew on the project, though there will soon be two more crews.
The wastewater pipe will follow a route next to the Paul Bunyan Trail and connect to the wastewater treatment facility in Pine River.
