The Lake Shore City Council on Monday, June 22, discussed the need to hold a public hearing regarding proposed improvements to 72nd Street off of Jacobs Road.
Improvements include upgrading the existing road to city specifications, including bituminous surfacing.
This project would be done with Loon Lake Township because part of the road is in that township. A public hearing will be scheduled after the city hears more from Loon Lake Township.
Residents both in the city and township have petitioned for the road improvements.
The project cost has been estimated at $65,000-$70,000. Lake Shore would pay 65 percent of the cost and Loon Lake Township 35 percent.
Lake Shore’s policy is to have a portion of costs — 60 percent — assessed to residents on that road.
The council agreed to donate $115 to the National Child Safety Council for drug education and child safety.
In a discussion about drugs, Police Chief Steve Sundstrom said methamphetamine is coming back as a popular drug in the lakes area.
The drug’s prevalence had decreased along with the decrease in area meth labs. Now, however, rather than being made in the area, meth is being transported from Mexico and Texas.
Heroin is also becoming prevalent as it comes from the Twin Cities area, Sundstrom said.
In police department activity from June 24-July 21, officers reported 244 total incidents, including 132 traffic-related incidents and 112 miscellaneous calls.
Traffic incidents included 71 warnings, 45 citations, two DWI arrests and one property damage crash.
Miscellaneous calls included 15 disorderly/disturbance, 14 boat violation warnings, nine suspicious activity, seven residential/business alarms, six underage alcohol violations, five damage to property, three possession of drug paraphernalia, three possession of small amount marijuana, one theft complaint and one burglary complaint.
Lake Shore police assisted Nisswa police 10 times, Cass County four times and Crow Wing County once.
Land use permits
The city issued four permits in June for a total valuation of $428,780. That compares to five permits issued in June 2012 for a total valuation of $171,500.
June permits included one dwelling, two accessory structures, three decks/porches/patios, one septic system and one commercial addition/landscaping/patio.
To date, the city has issued 17 permits for a total valuation of $1,618,080. That compares to 21 permits issued by this time last year.
In other business, the council:
• Approved a proposal from Donald Hannahs Jr. for animal control services. The contract does include an increase for services, at roughly $10 per various service. Such an increase hadn’t been requested since 2006.
• Approved an ordinance amendment to allow the use of pervious materials.
• Learned the city’s population increased from 1,005 in 2011 to 1,013 in 2012, according to the population estimate from the state demographer’s office.
• Agreed to put calcium chloride on Agate Lake Road at an estimated cost of $4,000.
• Agreed to do a topographic survey of an area of Doyle Parkway to address longtime drainage concerns at an estimated cost of $2,500-$3,000.
• Agreed to install a berm on the north side of Bishop’s Landing at a cost not to exceed $3,000 to prevent water runoff.
• Agreed to join the Nisswa Area Historical Society for $100.
