Music In The Park starts this Saturday in Longville

Posted: July 1, 2013 - 6:36pm

The summer’s first Music in the Park program will occur this Saturday, July 6, in Longville. The program begins at 5 p.m. and concludes at 7 p.m. at the gazebo on the park-like grounds of Salem Lutheran Church.

Performing will be The Smokin’ Loons Band from Walker, Minnesota. The band plays a variety of music styles from country to rock and roll to the blues. It has a large play list but enjoys requests from listeners, too. Jill Anderson, drums and vocals, lives in Walker, Rob York, guitar and vocals, is from Bemidji, and Dr. Burton Haugen, M.D., bass and vocals, resides in Walker.

The band has performed in numerous venues the past several years. Among them are the Moondance Jam 20th Anniversary, Moondance Jammin’ Country Fest, Walker’s Ethnic Fest, The 502 – Chase on the Lake, Northern Lights Casino, Leech Lake Brewery’s Grand Opening and The Lucky Moose.

Admission is free, but free will offerings are appreciated. Ample parking space is available. Bring your own lawn chairs, blankets and picnic food to eat while you listen to and enjoy one of northern Minnesota’s finest bands. In case of inclement weather, the band’s performance will be held inside the church.

Popcorn and lemonade will be available for donations to Salem’s missions outreach to provide clean water in Africa.

Music in the Park is a community outreach activity of Salem Lutheran Church and supported by the Longville Area Community Choir. It is funded in part by grants from Lake Country Power, Arvig Enterprises, Blandin Foundation, and Longville Area Community Foundation.

Mark your calendar for other Music in the Park events at Salem. On Sunday, July 28, guitarist/vocalist Michael Hirst will perform at 5 p.m. in the gazebo. On Sunday, Sept. 1, the Bill Simenson Quintet with renowned vocalist Prudence Johnson will perform at 5 p.m. in the gazebo. On Friday, Oct. 4, the Augsburg Centennial Singers will present a concert at 7 p.m. inside the church.
