Chris Cunningham, Liz Steffen and Tyler Smith of the Backus Fire Department met with Pine River-Backus kindergartners June 6 to give them fire safety instructions.

Cunningham led a presentation in which firefighters showed students their gear and told them how to safely react in case of a fire. Smith donned his complete fire gear to show students how difficult it can be to understand firefighters who are wearing a Self Contained Breathing Apparatus.

The purpose of this exercise was to teach students not to be afraid of firefighters who respond to fires.

Students also got the chance to hold a fire hose nozzle and see a halligan tool. At the end of the presentation, students received stickers, pencils, refrigerator magnets and fire helmets. Pine River Police Chief Paul Sand brought in Dilly Bars for the students.
