The Fraser/Nelson American Legion Post 613 hosted Memorial Day celebrations at the Pine River Dam, the Pine Ridge Cemetery and the Swanburg Cemetery on Monday, May 27.

Keith Gardner, a 20-year veteran from the U.S. Air Force and Army Reserve, gave a speech at the dam and Swanburg Cemetery titled “Memorial Day 2013.” It urged U.S. citizens to keep veterans on their minds every day of the year.

“Remembering our fallen once a year is not enough. The widows, widowers, fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and children remember every day,” Gardner said.

At each location, Post 613 Color Guard members performed a rifle salute, hoisted an American flag and played Taps.

The Backus American Legion and Auxiliary conducted Memorial Day services at Evergreen Cemetery in Backus and Ponto Lake Cemetery in Ponto Lake Township. Guest speaker was former Army Capt. and West Point graduate Melinda Thein.
