At 7 p.m. Friday, May 24, 133 Pequot Lakes High School seniors will graduate in the high school gym.
“This senior class is very excited about being the last class in the old gym,” said high school principal Chip Rankin.
Next year’s class of 2014 will be the first to graduate in the school’s new gym, unless commencement moves outside.
As part of the $33 million building bond referendum, a new gym is under construction at the south end of the high school. The current high school gym will become the middle school gym.
Also as part of the referendum, the track and football field are being redone. Construction and renovations are scheduled to be complete this summer.
U.S. Rep. Rick Nolan of the Eighth Congressional District will give the commencement address. Nolan’s granddaughter, Ellie Heggerston, is a graduating senior, and Nolan lives in rural Crosby.
Valedictorians Erin Brine-Doyle, Gunnar Kuehl and Alexis Visser will give the valedictory speech together. Graduates chose fellow seniors Luke Fyle and Marissa Miller to give a joint senior address.
There will be no teacher or faculty member speaking this year.
Rankin said parking may still be an issue because of construction, but it’s improved from last year when construction had just started at the high school.
