Expect Highway 371 lane shifts, closures in Nisswa

Temporary signal at Nisswa Avenue provides access to local businesses

Posted: May 14, 2013 - 4:40pm

Motorists travelling Highway 371 in Nisswa will encounter lane shifts and short traffic interruptions on local streets after work began Monday, May 13.

Traffic changes include.

• Highway 371 between the south Highway 371/Hazelwood Drive intersection and Nisswa Avenue is reduced to a single lane in each direction as traffic switches to the existing northbound lanes. Traffic will then switch to the new southbound lanes while the northbound lanes are reconstructed. All lanes of Highway 371 will open in fall 2013.

• Access at the Highway 371/Main Street intersection is right-in, right-out only as the median crossover to southbound Highway closed and the traffic signal is being removed.

• The Highway 371/Nisswa Avenue intersection was a four-way stop for one to two days until the new, temporary signal system was activated. The signal system provides easy access between Highway 371, local businesses and the city of Nisswa, and will remain in place until the permanent signal is installed at the new Highway 371/County Road 18 intersection.

These initial closures and temporary signal are needed as crews reconstruct southbound Highway 371 and begin work on a pedestrian tunnel beneath Highway 371.

When complete, the project will improve motorist and pedestrian safety and mobility, reconstruct four lanes of Highway 371, improve turn lanes and provide a new Crow Wing County Road 18 connection. The project also adds a new pedestrian tunnel, improves local roads and utilities and creates better access to the Paul Bunyan Trail.
