The Backus City Council appointed Ann Birge on Monday, May 6, to fill the position vacated when James Thomas resigned from the council April 1 before moving out of the area.
Birge was the only applicant to apply for the open council seat. She is known by multiple current members and was unanimously accepted by the council and sworn in during the meeting.
Birge is the mother of five children, two of whom graduated from Backus High School; three graduated from Pine River-Backus High School. She works in Walker with the post office.
She has lived with her husband in the Backus area for 40 years, but they moved into the city 11 years ago.
“It’s just him and I, so it’s time to get involved. I’ve been here 40 years,” she said. “I’m excited to learn more, to see what’s going on and get more involved with the community.”
