Summer hours begin at Crow Wing County Landfill

Posted: April 23, 2013 - 5:28pm

The Crow Wing County Landfill began its summer hours the first weekend in April and operates 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The following services are available to residents at the landfill site:

• An electronics collection for businesses in Crow Wing County will be held May 15 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the landfill. This is an opportunity for businesses to save money on shipping costs while disposing of surplus or obsolete computer and electronic equipment.

When equipment is brought to the Landfill, the office will provide directions to the site where the collection will take place. County staff will off load the equipment, weigh it and provide a bill of lading for record keeping.

Land Services works with Asset Recovery to dispose of unwanted business electronics. Asset Recovery follows federal military guidelines for destroying all data.

The cost to dispose of business electronics is 35 cents per pound and Land Services pays the transportation fees.

• The Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) program opened for the season April 24. Starting in May, the HHW facility will be open the second Wednesday and second Saturday of the month through October from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Examples of HHW include paint, cleaners, garden chemicals, automotive products and aerosol cans.

• The landfill takes household garbage, but many residents do not realize the landfill will accept other items such as fiberglass boats, mattresses, furniture and mobile homes. The landfill also has a demolition landfill to dispose of demolition materials.

Residents are also encouraged to use the free compost site to dispose of material from gardens, leaves and lawn clippings. Brush and branches must be kept separate and disposed at a separated area.

Certain items are banned from the actual landfill; however, there are specified drop-off locations at the landfill site to dispose of these items for a small fee.

These include appliances or white goods such as refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, washers and dryers, stoves, hot water heaters and microwaves; electronics such as computers and their components, TVs, VCR/DVDs, stereos and telephones; tires with or without rims; and scrap metals such as lawn mowers, grills and metal piping. These items are then recycled.

• The landfill also provides the following services for free or a small, nominal fee: recycling of glass, plastics, metal and paper, used motor oil/antifreeze and lead-acid car/marine batteries for residents.

There is a 50-cent fee for oil filters and $1 per gallon of antifreeze. The county does provide other recycling/used oil locations throughout Crow Wing County.

Upon arriving at the county landfill site, residents must stop at the landfill office. The attendant will discuss the items to be disposed, collect any fees and give directions to where the drop-off locations are for disposal. All loads coming to the landfill must be covered to ensure roadways are not littered with debris.
