Construction of the gym addition at Pequot Lakes High School is progressing.
As outside appearances come together with metal panels and lettering, the inside of the gym is coming along as well.
The large addition consists of two gyms — a main gym and an auxiliary gym — as well as a weight room, four locker rooms, concessions, community education offices and one classroom.
According to reports from ICS consulting, the walking track along the upper perimeter of the gym is complete. Basketball hoops have been installed, and crews are waiting for moisture to leave the concrete before the maple wood flooring can be installed. Humidity needs to be below 80 percent for the floor to be installed, the report stated.
The main gym is large enough for three basketball courts, and bleachers will be installed that cover the outside two courts during games, holding 2,000 people.
Four new locker rooms are being installed, two for girls and two for boys. Each set has a moveable divider for games, activities director Marc Helmrichs said during a tour of the addition.
Above the locker rooms is the weight room. The current goal is to divide the weight room in thirds, using one-third for cardio equipment, one-third as an open area for pilates or aerobics, and one-third for free weights.
A concession stand is also being constructed, which will face out to the track. Between the track and the concession stand will be a patio with tables where families can have a snack and still be able to watch the game. Helmrichs said he thinks it will be a popular hangout area.
In the hallway outside the gym is another concession stand with rest rooms on either side.
The entrance to the gym is an open-air foyer that is almost entirely windows. Above the entrance to the gym, along the wall, is the Patriots logo and lettering that reads “Pequot Lakes Patriots.”
The gym is scheduled for completion this summer. When construction is complete, the old high school gym will become the middle level gym, and the middle level gym will become a cafeteria.
