Keith Simar will present Relics Brought to Life: Fire Tower Restoration as the Crosslake Chautauqua program from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, at the Crosslake Community Center.
Last year the Pequot Lakes fire tower was restored and reopened to the public. This was the result of a partnership between the DNR and local volunteers, and is part of a larger initiative to preserve fire towers across America.
Simar, a former DNR area forest supervisor, will explain the history of fire towers and will discuss how the Pequot Lakes tower project evolved. Included in his presentation will be descriptions of early fire fighting technology and equipment, stories of past foresters and the possibilities for tourism and education created by fire tower restorations.
