Char Nelson named Crosslake clerk

City will advertise for new position of finance director/treasurer

Posted: March 26, 2013 - 4:50pm

Former deputy clerk Char Nelson was appointed Crosslake city clerk and interim treasurer at a continuation of a Crosslake City Council meeting on Tuesday, March 19.

Additionally, the council decided at a special meeting Monday, March 25, that it will advertise to hire a finance director/treasurer for the city.

The council has been debating how to staff its administration department since former city administrator Tom Swenson resigned in December 2012. Additionally, former clerk/treasurer Jenny Max recently resigned.

While Nelson is moving from deputy clerk to clerk, the council did not discuss hiring another deputy clerk.

Job descriptions drafted by Dan Vogt, a consultant the city hired, were approved for both the clerk and finance director/treasurer for the city.

Vogt recommended that even if the city does not have an administrator, it should have a “point person” for staff. He suggested the finance director/treasurer take that position.

The council also discussed pulling Nelson out of the union she’s currently a part of. Vogt said that in his experience, the clerk position is generally not a part of the union. Steve Fecker, the city’s labor attorney, will be contacted for more information on that process.

The council also approved a pay raise for Nelson, who will now be paid $4,579 a month ($54,948 a year). The council decided that the finance director/treasurer position will be advertised at a pay range of $50,000 to $55,000. Applications for the finance director/treasurer will be accepted until April 19 at 4:30 p.m.
