It was a difficult evening at the Pine River City Council meeting Tuesday, March 12, as council member Ron Derksen handed in his letter of resignation.
Derksen said after the meeting that he’s resigning because he’s been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
Derksen has been with the council for six years. His resignation is effective March 31.
“I’ve really enjoyed being on the council,” Derksen said. “I didn’t take it lightly, this resignation. Health issues are health issues. Thanks, all of you.”
He said during the meeting that he’ll still attend meetings as a citizen as long as he’s able.
In a phone interview, Derksen said his resignation will allow him to spend more time doing family things. He said he’s missed meetings because of his illness and didn’t feel that was right.
Mayor Jim Sabas thanked Derksen for his service.
The council accepted his resignation with regret, and is accepting letters of interest for the vacant position.
