Ryan Nelson, owner of Jr.’s No. 19 Barbecue, is planning a celebration on Barclay Avenue in Pine River to include a street dance, car show, pig roast, barbecue contest and vendor sale on May 4.

Nelson has been providing the city council with updates on plans for the festival, Cars-n-Que, and at the regular council meeting March 12 the council granted him a 3.2 malt liquor license for May 4 from 2-10 p.m.

Barclay Avenue will be closed at 2 p.m. from First Street to Third Street when festivities will begin with a car show at Sweet Cars, a pig roast and beer tent outside Jr.’s, a barbecue contest at the dam park and vendor fair throughout.

Music for the event is a ‘50s sock-hop theme, and a live band will play in the street until 8 p.m., when the band will move to the American Legion and play until 10 p.m.

The barbecue contest is open to amateurs and professionals alike. Entry is $75 with all proceeds going to the Wadena Eagles for children’s activities. First place in the contest will win $500, second will win $200 and third place will win $100.

Another competition will be held for the best barbecue side dish. Anyone can compete, Nelson said, for an entry fee of $10. The winner will receive a trophy.

Money from vendor tables will go to the Family Center of Pine River, and proceeds from the big roast will go to the Pine River Food Shelf, Nelson said.

Anyone interested in vending spaces, or for more information, can contact Nelson at 218-587-4227.
