75 years ago, Feb. 17, 1938

From the Pine River Journal

The mail was heavy at the County Agent’s office Tuesday. Checks for farmers who cooperated in the 1937 Agricultural Conservation Program were received. The bundle contained 1,058 checks, amounting to $52,000.

In 1937, the 100 men of the Minnesota Highway Department’s highway patrol had their busiest year in the history of the organization.

Leap year comes only once in four years, and only once in every 28 years does Feb. 29 fall on a Saturday. The Pine River merchants are going to provide a fabulous birthday to the lucky persons who have a birthday on Feb. 29 by giving them birthday presents.

Once again the Tigers were in a showdown with Pequot Lakes, but this time it was at the opposing gym. It was going to take a super effort by the Tigers to beat Pequot, who were coming off an emotional win over Backus.

Cory Swenson (11th grade) is on his way to becoming one of the most successful wrestlers in Pequot Lakes-Pine River-Backus Road Crew history. Currently he has 108 wins with Sections (Feb. 21-22) and State (Feb. 27-March 1) coming up.

Pine River-Backus High School music students put their talents on the line Feb. 8 to drum up — and sing up — funds for their upcoming trip to Disney World in April.
