On Saturday, Jan. 19, the Pequot Lakes High School speech team headed to its first tournament of the season in Grand Rapids, taking home eight awards in six different categories. For many team members, this was the first time competing at a varsity level tournament.
In Creative Expression, Allie Miller won a blue ribbon and Katie Northenscold received a red ribbon.
In Extemporaneous Reading, Abbey Person received a white ribbon.
In Humorous Interpretation, Rene Anick won a red ribbon.
In Serious Prose, Angela Cole took home a blue ribbon.
Luke Fyle won an award in two categories: a red ribbon in Dramatic Interpretation and a blue ribbon in Dramatic Duo along with Marissa Miller.
On Saturday, Jan. 26, the team traveled to McGregor and won a total of nine awards in seven categories, including a second-place trophy for overall team performance.
In Dramatic Duo, Emily Espeseth and Mackenzie Renford received a blue ribbon and Renford also received a blue ribbon in Creative Expression.
In Informative, Vanessa Sellner took second place.
Anick took home a blue ribbon in Humorous Interpretation.
In the Dramatic Interpretation, Cole received a blue ribbon and Fyle took third place.
In Serious Prose, Cole took second place and Ben Sullivan won third place.
In Great Speeches, Charlie Box placed second.
This weekend, the team travels to Blackduck for its third competition, and the junior high team will begin its season.
