Emily City Council makes annual appointments

The Emily City Council made annual appointments Monday, Jan. 7, its first meeting of the year. Mayor George Pepek and council members Ryan Johnson and Gary Hanson were sworn in at an earlier date after being elected in November.

The council designated 6 p.m. the second Tuesday of each month for regular city council meetings. The council appointed the Crosby-Ironton Courier as official city newspaper and the Northland Press as the secondary newspaper. Pine River State Bank was named the city’s primary depository with Unity Bank as the secondary depository.

Steve Qualley of Gamello, Qualley, Pearson and Mallek will remain city attorney. SEH of Brainerd was named city engineer.

In other business Jan. 7, the council:

• Approved a contribution of $375 from the Roosevelt and Lawrence Area Lakes Association for the 2012 watercraft inspector program.

• Approved the contribution of $3,000 from the Outing Chamber of Commerce for the First Response Equipment Fund.

• Approved a second fire assistant chief, Chad Jordan, to help with training at fire meetings. Until the 2014 budget discussion the position will be unpaid.

• Approved the purchase of six pagers for the fire department for $450 each.

• Increased the cost of renting city hall for events from $8 per day to $10 per half day.

• Approved Doug Thompson to be the city’s permanent part-time boiler operator at $16.50 per hour working up to 14 hours per week.

• Approved change in utility billing status of property in Downtown Mixed Use from Commercial to Residential. This change is conditional upon a Sewer Committee inspection.
