Crosslake council hears update from Sheriff

Posted: January 17, 2013 - 3:58pm

Crow Wing County Sheriff Todd Dahl visited the Crosslake City Council on Monday night, Jan. 14, to update the city on his department’s work.

Dahl reported that 2012 was a busy year with more than 3,000 cars stopped. June to August remain the busiest months, but the department is finding that it is busy year-round. Of those 3,000 stops, 1,300 occurred from June to August.

Dahl said the county has four full-time Lakes Area Drug Investigative Division officers. Drugs of choice continue to be methamphetamines and high grade marijuana.

A next-generation 911 system is in the works that will direct all 911 calls through the sheriff’s dispatch center.

Dahl said he hopes citizens are seeing more squad cars, as deputies are working to get out and go places where sheriff’s cars may not often be seen. He also said motorcycle crashes are up.

Crosslake Police Chief Robert Hartman made a presentation to the council on recognizing and responding to shooting threats. Often many stages of planning occur before shootings, where remarks are made or plans written out, Hartman said.

“We feel it’s very important for the public to help us,” Hartman said, asking that the public call the department to report suspicious activity.

Hartman also said his department is planning more walk-through visits at Crosslake Community School.

Hartman provided the council with a year-end report that showed a total of 2,297 calls for service in Crosslake for 2012 and 580 calls for service for Mission Township in 2012.

In December, Hartman reported a total of 138 calls in Crosslake. Of those, 26 were traffic warnings, three traffic citations, one traffic arrest, 16 EMS calls, 13 agency assists and 13 alarms.

For Mission Township in December, Hartman reported 33 calls. Traffic warnings accounted for 21 of those calls, and traffic citations for five.
