Manhattan Beach City Council members voted unanimously to increase their pay at the council’s regular monthly meeting Tuesday, Dec. 4.
Ordinance 10-12 passed Dec. 4, and says council members will receive $860 a year, the mayor will receive $3,600 a year, and the clerk/treasurer will receive $7,500 a year.
The ordinance went into effect at the beginning of 2013.
Formerly, council members were paid $760 a year, the mayor was paid $1,000 a year and the clerk-treasurer was paid $5,000 a year.
The planning and zoning chairman and secretary will now be paid $100 each per meeting attended, and the planning and zoning commission members will be paid $75 per meeting attended.
Council member Marlene Yurek was the first to bring up the issue of pay; she suggested that council members be paid by a per-meeting basis, as she was not able to make it to all council meetings.
The ordinance drafted in light of Yurek’s comments provided council members with $125 per meeting. That ordinance was rejected as many viewed it as too expensive for the city, and it was replaced with Ordinance 10-12.
Council meeting minutes show that a public hearing for Ordinance 10-12 took place Nov. 7, 2012.
In other business Dec. 4, the council:
• Heard from Tim Bray, Crow Wing County highway engineer. Bray discussed the county’s five-year plan with the council. Other road issues, including ditch damage from ATVs and mailbox damage from plows, were also discussed.
• Discussed staining city hall, but tabled the issue until spring. The issue of spraying for lady bugs was also tabled until spring.
