With the change of seasons this week, this column should have been about light spring dishes. Looking in the backyard there’s places with over three feet of snow on the ground and the temperature Sunday morning was hovering around 10 below zero. Right now, it just doesn’t feel much like spring.
Somewhere I read that exercise is a natural “upper.” But times like these, nothing gives you a bit of hope like a good chocolate dessert. Chocolate comes from a fruit called a pod that grows on the cacao tree. In Latin cacao trees are called “Theobroma Cacao,” or “food of the gods.” As well as tasting delicious, chocolate has been associated with magical, medicinal and mythical properties. Maybe just the thing we need to get us through until spring actually shows up.
Maybe eating a chocolate cupcake is a temporary fix to this never ending winter. But right now everyone seems to need a little something to beat these winter blahs. Since it is still to cool to open windows and get fresh air into the house, baking chocolate is ideal as you smell the wonderful aroma of your baked goods throughout the entire house.
So if you’re feeling down because spring seems to have forgotten to arrive, think about making your family a chocolate surprise for dessert. It’s good way to brighten up the day and forget about all of that snow that still needs to melt.
