The Kite Flying contest held Saturday at the fairgrounds proved very successful in spite of the postponement. The contest was scored on points according to the highest flight, largest, smallest, best decorated, most novel and kite with the most pull, best constructed and best flying ability.

Grilled Reuben sandwiches will be featured at the Backus American Legion on Friday, May 10, the day before the opening of the fishing season. The sandwiches will be served from 4 p.m. until gone and include chips and dill pickles for $4.

The post’s Friday night meat raffle will feature seven rounds with five packages per round being awarded for a $1 ticket. Complimentary beverages will be awarded in a special drawing after each meat raffle round.

The post’s all new bingo program featuring 12 games, including a progressive pot, begins at 7:30 p.m.

Scholarships for Horticulture Students attending CLC

The University of Minnesota Extension Crow Wing County Master Gardeners donated two $600 scholarships for horticulture students attending Central Lakes College. Sharon Bodie, president of the University of Minnesota Extension Crow Wing County Master Gardeners, presented the $1,200 check to Pam Thomsen, director of Resource Development and the CLC Foundation.

The Brainerd Family YMCA will hold a Red Cross Lifeguard Training class Friday-Monday, May 24-27 (Memorial Day).

A detailed informational flyer is online at brainerdlakesymca.org or stop at the YMCA. Participants must be 15 by the first class. Upon completion of the course, participants will have gained general knowledge of lifeguarding and will be qualified to lifeguard at most facilities.

The course includes CPR for lifeguards, first aid and AED training. Cost including instructor manual is $225.
